Kelly Rowland: I Work Hard To Look Good, But Confidence Is The Ultimate Beauty Secret

SEXY singer Kelly Rowland is in the best shape of her life as she prepares to release her third solo album.

The popstar was one third of girlband Destiny’s Child and went on to win a Grammy Award when she decided to go it alone in 2002.

Kelly, 29, has revealed she got through almost a dozen personal trainers to perfect the stunning body she’s happy to show at the Miami beach near her home.

She said: “I’ve been working out. My trainer Jeanette Jenkins has been really tough on me about my eating and all kinds of stuff. I stayed on it so I’m really proud of myself.

“She does a lot of cardio with me and yoga. Her approach to working out is completely different from any other trainers I’ve had – and in my lifetime I’ve probably had 11.

“She’s the best one I’ve had. I love her and I love working with her.”

Finally, here’s a celebrity with an incredible body who admits it’s hard work achieving it and hard work keeping it.

But Kelly is allowed the occasional break from her healthy regime.

She said: “Jeanette does believe we should have one cheat day a week. But I have no fried food and no sweets.

“Sweets are not my friend at all. They like to hold on to the fat in my body, so I’d rather do without.”

Kelly’s career as a singer who has to stay fit for the rigorous tours and high-energy dance routines of music videos – as well as the pressure of being in the public eye – means she’s always been focused on looking the best she can.

But she claims she does it not for her image but for her happiness.

She said: “The truth is that it’s not about looking good for a music video. It’s about being healthy for my lifestyle.

“I’m always moving. I want to build exercise into my day and when I exercise I feel so good. I feel healthy, I feel rejuvenated.”

While former bandmate Beyonce has gone on to become one of the biggest-selling female artists of all time, Kelly has enjoyed a more varied career.

She has not only had several hit albums and singles but also ventured into film and TV.

Her solo music career began on a high when she teamed up with rapper Nelly eight years ago.

She recorded the vocals for his track Dilemma, from the huge album Nellyville. The song was nominated for a Grammy for Record Of The Year and Kelly won the award in the Best Rap/Sung Collaboration category.

That win was followed up with two successful solo albums.

Simply Deep, released in 2002, included the hit single Stole and 2007′s Ms Kelly sold 1.2million copies worldwide.

Her third album will be released in September. On it, she collaborates with some of the best names in the business.

Ne-Yo, Brian Kennedy, who produced Rihanna’s single Disturbia, and Rico Love, who produced Beyonce’s I Am…Sasha Fierce, are among those who’ve added their expertise to her new tracks.

First single from the new album is Commander, a slick dance track for which she once again teamed up with French DJ and producer David Guetta.

They first worked together on the single When Love Takes Over, which was a global hit last year and also went on to win at the Grammys.

She said: “It’s a great list of people. It’s still a dance record, it definitely makes you move your hiney.

“I think that ‘s one of the things I love about Commander and one of the things I loved about When Love Takes Over – that it makes you dance. The new album has that element to it.”

Last year marked many new beginnings for Kelly as she signed to a new record label, Motown, and swapped her R’n'B sound for the dance and electro style she fell in love with during a summer spent in clubs across Europe.

The album was recorded in Los Angeles, New York and Miami, which she currently calls home. It’s a handy base for the presenting and acting work she’s been racking up.

As well as parts in American sitcoms, she took on devils of the big screen in the horror movie Freddy vs Jason, before changing tack with a role in the romcom The Seat Filler, which was executively produced by Will Smith.

Kelly’s latest TV project, The Fashion Show, was such a success in the US that the second series will also be shown in the UK.

Starting tomorrow, it follows 15 wannabe designers who compete in a fashion knockout to win £80,000 and the chance to put their creations on sale.

Kelly hosts the show with designer Isaac Mizrahi and fashion boss Fern Mallis.

A studio audience vote on which clothes they prefer, giving the often wacky designers an insight into what people want to wear. The contestant with the least votes is eliminated.

Isaac has coined a catchphrase that perfectly sums up the often brutal and bitchy fashion world. His farewell to the poor hopeful in the firing line one week was: “We’re just not buying it, bye-bye darling.”

Kelly doesn’t find it hard to dish out bad news to the candidates either.

She said: “I think we all need constructive criticism when we’re trying to become successful. But I was never there to bring them down.

“I want to see them grow as designers.

“When I was offered the show, it was such a miracle experience – especially working with Isaac, who is such an icon and a good and funny person.

“One of the things I always told the designers was to make sure you’re comfortable with what it is you’re doing and what it is you’re going to bring to the table. And be confident in your designs.

“For me, it always goes back to being confident in yourself, period. Be confident in what you have on, because if you don’t then everybody can tell you hate it and the outfit wears you.”

As a woman who’s walked up many red carpets, Kelly rates confidence as the ultimate beauty booster.

Her own favourite designers are Dolce and Gabbana, Dsquared and Roberto Cavalli, whose sexy gowns are also loved by Beyonce, Cheryl Cole and Jennifer Lopez.

Kelly has no plans to design her own range of clothes and has been on the catwalk only once – for a heart disease charity at New York Fashion Week.

Instead, she’s concentrating on her new album and planning a tour for later in the year, when she hopes to return to Glasgow. Her last visit was to perform at the MOBOs in September.

As for Beyonce and Michelle Williams, the third member of Destiny’s Child, Kelly says they’ll always be friends but fans shouldn’t hold their breath for a reunion.

She said: “I stay in touch with Beyonce and Michelle. Michelle is doing fantastic, both of them are absolutely great. But you know what? As of right now, I’m just focused on being a Commander.”

Kelly Rowland presents The Fashion Show on Really, weekdays from tomorrow until June 25 at 8pm (Sky 248, Virgin 267).
